Ensure all ceiling smoke and CO alarms produce loud alert signals and replace aging batteries.
Supplies You'll Need
Step stool or ladder
Fresh 9V or AA batteries (if chirping)
Microfiber duster
Step-by-Step Instructions
Walk to each detector unit (bedrooms, hallways, basement, living room).
Press and hold the 'TEST' button for 3-5 seconds until the horn sounds a loud pattern.
Vacuum or wipe away dust and spiderwebs from the sensing vents using a duster.
If any alarm chirps intermittently or fails the test button, replace its batteries immediately.
Replace any alarm past its rated life — smoke alarms at 10 years and CO alarms typically every 5-10 years (manufacture date is printed on the back). Sensors wear out even when the test button still sounds.
Log test confirmation in your choreloop maintenance journal.
