Drain Water Heater Sediment
PlumbingUtility RoomSeasonalEvery 6 months
Flush mineral sediment buildup from the tank bottom of a tank-style water heater to improve heating efficiency and extend tank lifespan.
Supplies You'll Need
- Bucket (2+ gallons)
- Garden hose with standard hose threading
- Screwdriver or adjustable wrench
- Towels
⚠️ Safety Warnings
- Turn off the gas supply or power to the water heater before draining.
- The water draining from the valve can be extremely hot — wear gloves and stand clear.
- Never restore power or gas until the tank has completely refilled — heating an empty tank destroys heating elements or fires the burner dry.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Turn the gas control to 'Pilot' (gas) or flip the circuit breaker off (electric).
- Attach a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank and run the other end to a floor drain or large bucket.
- Close the cold water inlet valve and open a hot water faucet somewhere in the house to relieve pressure.
- Open the drain valve and let the water flow out until it runs clear.
- Once drained, close the drain valve and remove the hose.
- Turn the cold water inlet back on and let the tank refill completely (keep the hot faucet open until water runs steadily).
- Turn the power or gas back on once the tank is full.
💡 Pro Tips
- Hard water areas require flushing every 6 months; soft water areas can stretch to yearly.
- If the water drains brown or rusty, close the drain, fill, and repeat until clear.
