Clean Washing Machine & Gasket
LaundryLaundry RoomMonthly
Remove detergent residue, mold, and mildew from the washer drum and door gasket to prevent musty odors on clean clothes.
Supplies You'll Need
- White vinegar (2 cups) or washing machine cleaner tablet
- Microfiber cloth
- Old toothbrush
- Baking soda (1/2 cup)
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Wipe around the rubber door gasket with a vinegar-dampened cloth, pulling back the folds to remove trapped hair, lint, and mold.
- Scrub any visible mildew spots with an old toothbrush dipped in vinegar.
- Pour 2 cups of white vinegar into the detergent dispenser (or place a cleaning tablet in the drum).
- Run the hottest, longest cycle available on an empty machine.
- Sprinkle 1/2 cup of baking soda into the drum and run a second hot cycle if odors remain.
- Wipe down the detergent drawer, door glass, and exterior, then leave the door open to air dry.
๐ก Pro Tips
- Leave the washer door or lid open between loads so the drum dries out and mildew cannot grow.
- Front-loader door gaskets trap hair and grime โ check the rubber folds every time you clean.
