Clean Dryer Vent & Exhaust Duct
LaundryLaundry RoomSeasonalEvery 6 months
Remove accumulated lint from the dryer hose and exterior vent duct to prevent household fire hazards and improve drying efficiency.
Supplies You'll Need
- Dryer vent cleaning brush kit (flexible rod)
- Vacuum cleaner with hose attachment
- Screwdriver
- Foil duct tape
⚠️ Safety Warnings
- Always unplug electric dryers or turn off gas supply before pulling the unit away from the wall!
- Do not use plastic accordion ducting — replace it with heavy-duty semi-rigid metal ducting if needed.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Unplug the dryer power cord (or shut gas valve) and gently slide the dryer out from the wall.
- Disconnect the flexible duct hose from the back of the dryer using a screwdriver.
- Use a vacuum hose attachment to clear out lint deep inside the dryer exhaust trap.
- Attach the flexible duct brush to a drill or handle and snake it into the wall duct, rotating to knock free caked-on lint.
- Go outside to the exterior exhaust vent cover, clear any lint clogging the louvers, and vacuum out the outer pipe.
- Reattach the duct to the dryer securely using UL-listed foil tape (do not use standard duct tape).
- Slide the dryer back into place, plug it in, and run on Air Fluff for 5 minutes to clear remaining loose dust.
💡 Pro Tips
- Do this chore twice a year (Spring & Fall) to cut electricity usage by up to 30%.
- Check the exterior hood flap while the dryer is running to make sure air flows freely.
